The foreskin is the supple, mobile fold of skin that covers all or part of the glans when the penis is at rest. During an erection, it usually retracts to uncover the glans. Its inner surface is a sensitive mucous membrane, and the frenulum, a small fold beneath the glans, also contributes to sensation. The foreskin helps protect the glans and keep it moist. Circumcision is the removal of the foreskin, for cultural, religious, or sometimes medical reasons. Knowing this anatomy helps you better understand your body and recognize what falls within the range of normal.
