The pelvic floor is the set of muscles and tissues that close off the bottom of the pelvis and support the bladder, the uterus or prostate, and the rectum. Often equated with the perineum, it provides organ support and continence, and contributes to sexual function. An overly tight pelvic floor can contribute to pain or discomfort during intercourse, while weakened tone can lead to leakage or a loss of sensation. The balance to aim for is not only strength, but also the ability to relax these muscles, which can be learned with appropriate support.
