The perineum refers to the region and group of muscles at the base of the pelvis, between the genitals and the anus. It forms a true muscular hammock that supports the bladder, the genital organs, and the rectum. The perineum plays an important role in continence, organ support, childbirth, and sexuality, since its tone and its ability to relax influence sensation and pleasure. Learning to sense this area, to contract it but above all to relax it, is often part of helpful support, for example after pregnancy.
